82 year old woman made the Nets Dance team

Two women are now officially the oldest members of the Nets’ new senior citizen dance squad. Margaret Dellavalle, 82, made the cut. So did Fanny Militar, 80.

“We’re living much longer today, and we’re capable of competing,” said Dellavalle. “I’m happy to have made it at my age.”

Auditions for the squad were held last week at the NBA team’s practice facility in East Rutherford, N.J., and the winners were chosen Monday.

Originally, Nets management planned to select 12 dancers age 60 and over, but the final roster numbers 15 - and they bent the age requirements by a few months.

“The turnout was great, and the talent was great,” said Nets spokesman Barry Baum. “It was better than we expected.”

Six dancers are from Manhattan, including Deanna Schwartz and Jeri Kadison, and one is from Bronxville in Westchester County. The rest hail from New Jersey. All are women except one: Joe Bianco, 62, of Ramsey.

New Jersey Nets held tryouts for seniors

The New Jersey Nets held tryouts Monday for their “first-ever senior dance team.” At least that’s what they called it. They were either looking for aging cheerleaders, or people who remember the Nets’ last league championship.

The Nets’ senior dance team will comprise both men and women.  The concept makes sense. After the women cheerleaders perform the splits, they will need someone close by to help them get back up.

Thirty-four women and one man busted their finest moves for a spot on the dance squad. Judges will pare the field down to a lucky dozen who will dance for at least six games.

Nets fans are being asked to come up with a name for the senior dancers.
